About Classic chess

What is Classic chess?

Classic chess, often referred to as standard chess, is a two-player strategy game played on a square board divided into 64 squares of alternating colors. The game pieces consist of 16 for each player, including a king, queen, bishops, knights, rooks, and pawns. The objective is to checkmate the opponent's king, putting it in a position where it cannot escape capture.

Rules

  • Setup: The game begins with each player arranging their pieces on the two rows closest to them. The back row, or the first rank, typically consists of rooks, knights, bishops, queen, king, bishops, knights, and rooks, from left to right. The front row, or the second rank, is filled with pawns.

  • Piece Movements:

    • The king moves one square in any direction.
    • The queen can move horizontally, vertically, or diagonally any number of squares.
    • Rooks move horizontally or vertically any number of squares.
    • Bishops move diagonally any number of squares.
    • Knights have a unique L-shaped move: two squares in one direction and one square perpendicular to it.
    • Pawns move forward one square but capture diagonally.
  • Special Moves:

    • Castling allows the king and a rook to move simultaneously under certain conditions.
    • En passant is a pawn capture that occurs when a pawn advances two squares from its starting position and lands beside an opponent's pawn.
  • Check and Checkmate:

    • When a king is under threat of capture, it is in check.
    • Checkmate occurs when a king is in check, and there is no legal move to escape capture.
